Five Ideas

Introduction

Consistency is a key idea in design. Inconsistent design can break brand identities, which is why big companies take the time to publish big manuals on how their brand should be treated. With this in mind I decided to experiment with creating consistency out of inconsistent design.

Five Ideas

Five Ideas is a book of short stories, but the real focus is on the design. I had five different ideas on how to design the book, and I decided that instead of going with just one, I would use them all — and make them mesh. A design version of Happiness [Is a Warm Gun], if you will.

Result

The book turned out visually interesting (click to enlarge):

I was able to get some consistency through type and color. Using common themes and repeating images between chapters helped too. As far as this book goes, the experiment worked — but I don't think it could work again, as a series of books. Just as with every brand, some consistency is necessary. Bottom line: hold on to your brand guidelines, Nike. Unless your designer is John Lennon.
